Mendelssohn: Adagio-Allegro (Mvmt I), from Streichersinfonie Nr. 8 - for Woodwind Quintet
ISMN# 979-0-3071-0055-8
ASCAP WORK ID# 925552685
This advanced-intermediate woodwind quintet arrangement of Felix Mendelssohn's "Adagio-Allegro (Mvmt I)" from his String Symphony No. 8 is a wonderfully challenging piece — it is quintessential Mendelssohn. This transcription of a Romantic Era work is perfect for recitals, contests/competitions, weddings, graduation ceremonies, music conferences, and background-dinner-music gigs. It was written for most advanced ensembles, from college groups to professional quintets. This movement features a beautiful, mysterious opening that segues into a lively, spirited section full of dynamic contrast and fiery technical passages. Although Mendelssohn wrote this piece when he was only 13, it already demonstrates his unique compositional style, blending Baroque and Classical influences. I have included an alternate bass clarinet part in lieu of a missing bassoon; it works quite well as a substitute for the bassoon. Originally scored for string orchestra, I hope you enjoy this unique setting for winds. This dynamic, spirited arrangement of a popular German composer's prolific output will bring a taste of Europe to your special music events.
